Rwanda has designated eKash as its national instant payment system, effective July 14, 2026, in a move aimed at making digital payments faster and significantly cheaper for consumers and businesses.

The platform supports account-to-wallet, wallet-to-account, account-to-account, and wallet-to-wallet transactions. Residents will not need to sign up for a new service and can continue using their existing bank accounts and mobile wallets to make payments.

Under the new framework, users can send up to RWF 10 million (≈ $6,800) per transaction, with no daily transaction limit. Transaction fees are capped at RWF 20 (≈ $0.01) regardless of the value of the payment, making eKash one of the lowest-cost instant payment systems on the continent.

“As part of its supervisory mandate, NBR oversees the operations of eKash and works closely with relevant stakeholders to help ensure that the system operates safely, reliably, and in line with applicable requirements,” the National Bank of Rwanda said in a statement.

The rollout places Rwanda among a growing number of African countries that have invested in national instant payment infrastructure. Countries including Nigeria, Ghana, Tanzania, South Africa, and Egypt have introduced similar systems to enable real-time transfers between financial institutions while reducing the cost of digital payments.

Instant payment systems have become a key part of many countries’ digital finance strategies. By allowing money to move between banks and mobile money providers within seconds, they help reduce reliance on cash, improve financial inclusion, and lower the cost of sending and receiving money.

Local banks have already begun implementing the directive, according to local media reports. Bank of Kigali has reportedly informed customers of the changes. Under the new pricing, transactions that previously cost as much as RWF 5,000 (≈ $3.40) now cost RWF 20 (≈ $0.01).

The introduction of eKash is the latest step in Rwanda’s broader effort to digitise its financial system and expand access to affordable digital payment services. Lower fees and interoperability across banks and mobile wallets are expected to encourage greater adoption of electronic payments by both consumers and merchants.
