Apple has pulled operating system (OS) support for three generations of watches in its latest WatchOS 27 launch.
The tech giant made this public during the Worldwide Developers Conference to reveal the latest updates to its operating systems.
The new watch operating system will only support Apple Watch Series 10 devices, Apple Watch Ultra 2, and Apple Watch SE 3. The list of supported devices was later updated to include the Series 9. Other Apple Watches not listed above will not be powered by the new OS, meaning they are typically done for.
This is a new development in the Apple Watch ecosystem, as the number of dropped watches during a new OS launch has increased. The previous WatchOS 26 supported Apple Watch Series 6 and later, Apple Watch SE (2nd generation) and later, and all Apple Watch Ultra models. This list was initially supported by a much later watchOS version, namely WatchOS 11.
Apple Watch is one of the most successful examples of wearable tech, and sold a whopping 33 million Units in 2025. Despite the huge numbers, sales are actually dropping; shipments have dropped from 43 million in 2022 to 34 million in 2024.
Siri AI gets an upgrade, now available on Apple Watch
The second-biggest announcement of the day at the event was the introduction of Siri AI to Apple Watch models and a systemic upgrade.
“Apple products are an essential part of people’s lives, and this year we’re bringing powerful new capabilities to empower our users in even more ways,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering.
“We’re delivering the next generation of Apple Intelligence across our platforms; introducing Siri AI, a profoundly more intelligent, knowledgeable, and capable Siri; expanding child safety features with intuitive new tools for families; and making our software platforms faster, more reliable, and more delightful than ever before.” He added.
When users need smart answers, they can leverage the AI on their watch instead of pulling out their phones or laptops. This feature is currently unavailable to users in the European Union.
The Siri AI feature has been available on Apple phones and laptops for a while, although it doesn’t get as much attention as its peers in the Industry.
Additional support for Apple Watch models includes Perimenopause and Menopause in the Health App, as well as the workout buddy, now available in Spanish. Others include a new Find My App that consolidates Find Devices, Find Items, and Find People into a single app.
Apple’s watchOS 27 is now available as a developer beta, and it will arrive for end users this fall.
Tim Cook’s Last Major Event
The long-standing CEO of Apple, Tim Cook, just attended his last major event as the man in the realm of affairs at Apple. Cook seized the opportunity to deliver a personal and emotional farewell to the Apple community during his keynote speech.
The Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) is an annual gathering of developers hosted by Apple where new updates on software engineering and products are shared. Tim Cook just attended his last version of this event, which is the only major event left under his watch as CEO.
Apple previously announced that Cook will officially step down as CEO on September 1, 2026, transitioning into the role of Executive Chairman. He will be succeeded by John Ternus, Apple’s current Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering.
John Ternus joined Apple in 2001 as a member of the product design team, according to a TechCrunch report. He was promoted to Senior Vice President in 2021 and joined an elite list of speculated successors of Tim Cook.
Ternus was the youngest on the list, which aligns perfectly with Apple’s strategy of hiring a CEO who will lead the company for many years.
