Africa’s unicorn Flutterwave has motivated and mobilized its employees, handing out over 100 promotions and adjusting salaries to reflect the cost of living in Nigeria’s harsh economy.
The wave of internal promotions and salary adjustments was announced by Flutterwave’s CEO, Olugbenga Agboola, who reiterated that the company’s progress remains rooted in its people.
” From day one, we have focused on solving hard problems for Africa at scale. That journey is only possible because of Wavers who step up, take ownership, and deliver with excellence. This year, we promoted over 100 Wavers, a reflection of the strong culture of growth, ownership, and excellence we continue to build together. ” Gbenga said
” As we continue building for the future, we remain committed to supporting our people in meaningful ways. Alongside these promotions, we are issuing a one-time economic relief payment for all Wavers globally. We are also providing tax and cost-of-living adjustments payments for our Nigeria team in recognition of evolving economic realities.” He added
Annete Akpolo, Head of People and Culture at Flutterwave, added to the conversation, highlighting Flutterwave’s unique approach to talent management.
“Our goal has always been to build an environment where our people can focus on doing their best work, rather than being weighed down by economic anxiety,” Akpolo said.
“Pairing merit-based individual growth with supporting the collective needs of the whole team are both essential parts of how we build a company culture where people genuinely want to stay and grow over the long term,” she added.
The announcements coincided with a wave of promotional posts by Flutterwave employees on LinkedIn year-round. Flutterwave is the second major Nigerian-owned company to pay its workforce heavily after the BUA Group. The BUA group disbursed N30 billion in cash rewards to 510 long-serving employees late last year.
Flutterwave is also one of Africa’s earliest and largest fintech unicorn startups, valued at about $3 billion. It first crossed the $1 billion threshold in 2021. This follows a $170 million fundraising round from investors such as Avenir Growth Capital.
Besides moving money across borders, Flutterwave is tailored for African merchants. It provides payment infrastructure that helps merchants accept and receive money. As of the time of the report, Flutterwave has surpassed one billion transactions. It has processed more than $40 billion in total payment value since its launch.
