Boniface Mungania, OGW, has been confirmed as Safaricom’s Chief Financial Services Officer, effective November 1, 2026, according to a post by Mbugua Njihia, Safaricom’s advisor. Mungania has held the role in an interim capacity since July, when his predecessor left.

He brings close to two decades of experience across financial services, digital transformation, customer care and business development.

He joined Safaricom in 2007 as a customer care representative. He later rose through several leadership roles, including Head of M-PESA Products and Services Development, Payments Tribe Lead and, most recently, Director of Public Sector Digital Transformation.

Safaricom says Mungania has played a key role in financial services innovations that changed how customers transact, save, and access financial services. He has also led national digital transformation projects across agriculture, healthcare, MSMEs and public finance.

Mungania takes over from Esther Waititu, who joined Safaricom in 2023 from KCB Group. Her last day was July 31, and the company said she was leaving to pursue other opportunities. Safaricom named Mungania interim chief financial services officer at the time.

Mungania’s profile suggests continuity. He has spent more than 19 years at Safaricom, and most of that time around M-PESA. He moved into M-PESA business development in 2011 and headed product management from 2016 to 2021. He then led the payments tribe and acted as Chief Digital Financial Services Officer for ten months from June 2022.

The role matters because M-PESA is pushing beyond payments into savings, credit, and investments. In February, Safaricom launched Ziidi Trader, which lets users trade Nairobi Securities Exchange shares through M-PESA. The service has more than 37 million users in Kenya.
