Adora Nwodo has been building things with technology for over a decade. In that time, she’s authored seven books, worked as an engineer at Microsoft, and taken on a leadership role in the US.

But the career she’s built hasn’t followed a straight line. In this conversation, she opens up about a job offer that was rescinded just before she was due to start, her father’s hopes that she would become a lawyer, what AI could mean for the future of software engineering, and the restlessness that has kept her pushing for more.

If your career were a movie, which would it be, and why?

Moana. She’s a princess whose island is dying, and she goes on a journey to save it, find herself, and help Maui find himself along the way. That’s been my career. I’ve never accepted the ordinary, even if it means stretching into hard challenges. I come out learning something each time, and I try to leave some sparkle behind me.
