VFD Microfinance Bank has appointed Nonso Kenneth Okoye as its new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer. Okoye takes over from Theodore Asamoah, who served as acting managing director and was previously the bank’s chief operating officer.
Okoye brings more than two decades of senior experience across corporate banking, risk governance, operational strategy, and professional financial advisory. He spent a substantial portion of his career within Standard Chartered Bank, where he held critical leadership portfolios across Nigeria and other African markets.
Most recently, Okoye served as Chief Operating Officer for Corporate and Investment Banking Coverage in Central Africa. In that role, he managed complex cross-border operations across Cameroon, Gabon, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Equatorial Guinea.
A notable highlight of his tenure was guiding the strategic transition and sale of Standard Chartered’s Cameroon franchise to Access Bank Cameroon, ensuring seamless operational continuity and regulatory alignment.
Before his regional assignment in Central Africa, Okoye drove operational risk and global banking strategy within Standard Chartered Nigeria. He’s also served as Head of Process, Risk and Governance for Global Banking, Chief Operating Officer for Financial Markets, and Origination and Risk Strategist.
Okoye began his career in consulting at KPMG and Arthur Andersen, where he focused on financial reporting, risk analysis, and business advisory. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, a member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management, and an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute.

VFD Microfinance Bank’s next chapter of digital scale
Okoye assumes control at a mature operational juncture for VFD Microfinance Bank. The institution has evolved from a conventional microfinance unit into one of the most prominent digital financial platforms in West Africa. Driven by its flagship digital banking app, VBank, the bank offers high-yield digital savings accounts, retail credit, investment products, and embedded transactional capabilities tailored for individuals and small businesses.
Under Okoye’s leadership, VFD Microfinance Bank will prioritise institutionalising tier-one corporate governance across its expanding digital channels. His strategy emphasises scaling the platform’s technological backend, strengthening compliance frameworks, and delivering targeted retail banking services to sustain customer retention and drive long-term transaction volume across the bank.
