On Saturday, September 26, Nigerian insurtech company Skydd officially unveiled V3, the latest evolution of its platform, at a private soft launch attended by customers, partners, and other members of its community.
The launch introduced a new mobile app with eight products designed to help Nigerians build, save, and protect what matters to them at different stages of life.
From Health Insured to Skydd
The day began with a look back at where the company started.
Chituru, the Founding Executive and Co-founder overseeing Business Development and Operations at Skydd, took guests through the company’s journey, which began as Health Insured with a focused mission to make health insurance more accessible and affordable for Nigerians.
The idea was simple. Insurance was often difficult to access, inconvenient to navigate, and hard to understand, and technology could help bridge the gap between insurers and the people who needed protection.
As the company grew, however, it became clear that health cover was only one part of the picture.
Nigerians need to protect different things at different stages of their lives, from their health and income to their homes, cars, children’s education, and long-term financial goals. The Health Insured name no longer reflected the broader ambition.
The company rebranded as Skydd, a name inspired by the Swedish word for protection, and expanded beyond health into areas such as auto insurance.
V3 takes that evolution a step further by bringing protection and financial planning together on a single platform.
Chituru also shared an update on the company’s growth. Since inception, Skydd has sold more than 40,000 policies, with over 20,000 currently active. Behind those numbers, she noted, are individuals, families, and businesses that have trusted Skydd to protect their health, vehicles, livelihoods, and futures.
Eight products, one journey
Anu, Co-founder overseeing Product and Marketing then introduced guests to the V3 product suite.
Rather than presenting the products as standalone offerings, she framed them around a broader question: as life changes, what are the things that matter most, and how can you protect them from unexpected setbacks? The eight products are designed to address different needs along that journey.
GoalGuard
GoalGuard combines structured savings with protection. Users choose a savings goal, set a timeline, and contribute weekly or monthly while earning returns on their savings.
Skydd describes the experience as a modern take on the traditional ajo system, but with an added layer of protection. If the saver dies before reaching their target, their family receives the full target amount rather than only what had been contributed.
The product is positioned as the flagship offering of V3.
Income Shield
Designed for salaried workers, Income Shield provides a monthly payment into a user’s Skydd wallet for up to six months if they lose their job through circumstances such as retrenchment. The product is available in three tiers and includes personal accident cover.
Future Scholar Fund
Future Scholar Fund is designed to help parents plan and protect their children’s education.
Parents choose a plan lasting between four and twelve years and make contributions towards the child’s education. If the parent is alive when the plan matures, the fund is paid out with a bonus. If the parent dies during the plan period, the full committed amount is paid out immediately.
Legacy Plan
Legacy Plan is Skydd’s life protection offering, with term assurance for a fixed period and whole life cover that extends for the customer’s lifetime and includes critical illness protection. For higher-value plans, customers can complete a simple medical review through the app.
AutoGuard
AutoGuard offers both third-party and comprehensive vehicle cover.
The onboarding process is designed to be simple. Customers can scan their vehicle plate number, after which their vehicle details are pulled automatically. Skydd says this can allow customers to get covered within minutes.
The company also plans to introduce another layer of vehicle protection within the next year, alongside vehicle tracking for higher-value vehicles.
Property Shield
Property Shield protects the contents of a home rather than the building itself.
The product covers items such as electronics, furniture, and valuables against events including fire, theft, flood, and storm damage. It is available across five plan levels and can also cover temporary accommodation costs following a covered event. The product is available to both renters and homeowners.
Wellness Plan
Wellness Plan is Skydd’s health protection offering, with individual, women’s, senior, family, and business plans. It also includes a Pay for Others option, allowing customers to purchase cover for people such as parents, siblings, or domestic staff.
Skydd says it plans to expand its network of HMO partners and explore additional options, including state health schemes.
TravelGuard
TravelGuard provides protection for travellers within Nigeria and internationally.
Local cover includes protection against flight delays, cancellations, and accidental injury, while international plans include Africa, worldwide, Schengen, and student travel options, as well as dedicated Hajj cover.
The product attracted particular interest during the launch, with attendees discussing the practical challenges Nigerian travellers can face when flying and travelling abroad.
Together, the eight products represent Skydd’s broader V3 proposition: one platform designed to help people build towards their goals while protecting the things that matter along the way.
From seeing the app to using it
After a tea break, guests got a first-hand look at the new Skydd app through a live demonstration.
The session covered the onboarding experience, funding a wallet, and purchasing plans across the eight products.
Guests then broke into smaller groups to try the app themselves, with members of the Skydd product team available to guide them through the experience.
The hands-on session also gave Skydd an opportunity to gather direct feedback from potential and existing users.
Two questions came up repeatedly during the feedback session: how straightforward the claims process is and whether customers would eventually be able to bundle multiple products together, such as health, auto, and property protection.
Skydd said bundled plans are expected to become available within the next year. For now, customers purchase each plan separately.
What comes next
For Skydd, V3 represents more than the launch of a new app and a wider product portfolio. It marks the company’s shift towards a broader vision of what protection can look like for Nigerians.
Chituru described the launch as the beginning of another chapter for the company, rather than an endpoint. She noted that Skydd’s success will ultimately be measured by the customers it serves, the trust it earns, and the value it creates.
With V3 now live, Skydd is betting on a simpler proposition: as Nigerians build their lives, their finances, and their futures, they should have a way to protect those things too.
Skydd V3 is now available. The app can be downloaded from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
