Fintech giant, OPay has confirmed that it remains fully operational in Nigeria, at a town hall held in Lagos on Wednesday, September 2, 2026. The town hall was convened to address false claims circulating on social media about the company shutting down.
It brought together OPay senior leadership, industry stakeholders and the media to respond to the claims directly.
Speaking at the event, Dotun Adekunle, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Technology Officer, OPay, said: “OPay is here, OPay is operating, and OPay is going nowhere. The message circulating online is false. There is no decision by OPay to shut down its operations in Nigeria, and there is no indefinite leave.”
Adekunle noted that the false message had claimed OPay would stop operating from September 1, and that the company’s services have continued normally beyond the date.
He added that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has acknowledged the claim as fake news, and urged Nigerians to verify information through OPay’s official channels before making financial decisions.
Akinfolabi Rokosu, Chief Legal Counsel, OPay, said the company is taking legal action against those responsible.
“We will pursue them and ensure that the law takes its full course. There will be no impunity.”
He confirmed that the DSS and the Nigeria Police Force are investigating, with OPay providing supporting evidence, and stressed that the action is about accountability rather than silencing scrutiny. “This is not about silencing anyone. It is about accountability, customer protection and respect for the rule of law.”
Industry stakeholders echoed the concern. Olalekan Disu, Financial Secretary, Association of Licensed Mobile Payment Operators, ALMPO, said: “Trust is the foundation of digital payments. False information about a major player can weaken confidence in the wider industry and discourage people and businesses from using digital payments.”
Stanley Jacobs, President of FintechNGR, agreed that trust underpins the sector’s growth and that responsible communication is essential to protecting it.
OPay used the town hall to highlight its ₦1.2 billion, ten year scholarship programme, which has supported students at institutions, including the University of Ibadan, Ahmadu Bello University, Obafemi Awolowo University and Lagos State University.
