How many times have you held back on something because it didn’t feel like the “right time”? Or told yourself you weren’t ready because you needed to learn more, read more, or prepare more before starting? Maybe you’ve even delayed your New Year goals because you feel you’re not ready to dive in yet. We’ve all been there. Waiting for the perfect moment might be the very thing holding you back, especially when you’re stepping into new territory.

Perfection can stall progress. The need to get everything just right can stop you from even starting. Instead of focusing on perfection, focus on consistency. Show up, even if it’s not your best day. Whether you’re learning a skill, networking, or building a side project, small, consistent actions are what lead to big results over time.

Perfectionism tricks you into thinking it’s better not to try than to risk falling short. But what actually happens?

  • You overthink instead of acting.
  • You delay instead of deliver.
  • You plan endlessly instead of executing.

Meanwhile, the consistent person, the one who shows up even on their “off” days—is quietly gaining ground.

Picture this:

  • You commit to learning a new skill in 2025. Instead of waiting for hours of uninterrupted time, you practice for just 30 minutes each day.
  • By the end of January, that’s 15 hours. By June, it’s over 90. By December, you’ve logged more than 180 hours.

While others are still waiting for the “perfect time,” you’re miles ahead because you kept at it.

Messy, consistent effort beats perfect inaction every single time.

So, what small, imperfect step can you take today? Start there. Then take another tomorrow. By this time next year, you’ll be amazed, not because you were flawless, but because you showed up, day after day.
