dLocal, a leading cross-border payment platform, has expanded its services by enabling Airtel Mobile Money as a payment method for Google Play users in Kenya. This strategic move aims to enhance digital accessibility and provide Kenyan users with a seamless payment experience on the Google Play Store.
Founded in 2016 and headquartered in Montevideo, Uruguay, dLocal specializes in connecting global enterprises with consumers in emerging markets through its innovative payment solutions. The company offers a comprehensive platform that allows merchants to accept local payments and manage payouts in multiple currencies, effectively bridging the gap between international businesses and underserved regions.
In September 2020, dLocal achieved unicorn status with a valuation of $1.2 billion, becoming Uruguay’s first tech company to reach this milestone. The following year, in June 2021, dLocal went public on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, raising approximately $617.65 million during its initial public offering.
Airtel Kenya has been making significant strides in the country’s mobile money sector. As of Q4 2024, Airtel Money’s market share increased to 8.9%, translating to approximately 3.76 million customers. This growth reflects a notable rise from the previous quarter’s 7.6% share, highlighting Airtel’s expanding influence in the Kenyan market.
Despite Airtel Money’s growth, Safaricom’s M-PESA remains the dominant player in Kenya’s mobile money landscape. However, M-PESA has experienced a decline in market share for five consecutive quarters, dropping by 2.3 percentage points to 91% in Q4 2024. This trend indicates a gradual shift as consumers explore alternative mobile payment options, fostering a more competitive environment.
The integration of Airtel Mobile Money as a payment option on Google Play is poised to significantly enhance digital accessibility for Kenyan users. By offering a localized and convenient payment method, this collaboration aligns with Google’s commitment to expanding its reach in emerging markets and providing users with seamless access to digital content and services.
This partnership not only benefits consumers but also positions dLocal and Airtel as key facilitators in the digital transformation of Kenya’s economy. As mobile money continues to play a pivotal role in financial inclusion, such collaborations are essential in driving the adoption of digital services across the region.
