MTN Nigeria has secured approval from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to lease frequency spectrum from T2 Mobile Limited, formerly 9Mobile, for a period of three years

The agreement, which takes effect from October 1, is in line with the company’s 2025 strategy to expand its network capacity and strengthen collaboration within the industry.

The move follows MTN’s recent signing of a national roaming agreement with T2 and the onboarding of Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs). It also comes as the company makes big cloud moves and continues talks with US and European firms to establish AI data centres across Africa, as reported by Condia yesterday.

T2 Mobile recently acquired 200,000 new subscribers. With this spectrum lease arrangement, MTN will be able to handle the additional network traffic through its infrastructure. The lease covers 5MHz frequency division duplex (FDD) in the 900MHz band and 15MHz FDD in the 1800MHz band, creating an integrated approach to boost capacity and coverage.

Commenting on the development, MTN Nigeria CEO Karl Toriola said the company is leveraging additional spectrum resources to enhance network performance in a cost-efficient and environmentally sustainable way. He added that MTN is committed to fostering a more collaborative telecom ecosystem that drives industry innovation and long-term sustainability.

In addition, the telco confirmed it will not renew its existing one-year spectrum lease agreement with Natcom Development and Investment Ltd (Ntel). That lease, which covers 5MHz FDD in the 900MHz band and 10MHz FDD in the 1800MHz band across 17 states, is set to expire on November 29, 2025.
