Anthropic, the parent company of Claude, has, in a shocking move, filed for an Initial Public Offering (IPO), moving ahead of OpenAI, which is also preparing for an IPO at a $1 trillion valuation.
The Generative AI company announced that it has submitted an S-1 filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, formally beginning the IPO process. Anthropic becomes the first Generative AI company to begin the IPO process. This comes after the company also became the most valuable private AI company, with a $965 billion valuation following a Series H fundraising round.
” Today, Anthropic, PBC confidentially submitted a draft registration statement on Form S-1 to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for a proposed initial public offering of our common stock. This gives us the option to go public after the SEC completes its review. The proposed initial public offering will depend on market conditions and other factors.” Said Anthropic on its blog.
” The number of shares to be offered and the price have not yet been set. This announcement is being published under Rule 135 of the Securities Act of 1933, as amended. It is not an offer to sell securities; nor is it a solicitation of an offer to buy them. Any offers, solicitations of offers to buy, or any sales of securities will be made only in accordance with the registration requirements of the Securities Act,” the company added.
Anthropic’s High Demand Calls for More Spending
Anthropic’s Claude is arguably the most sought-after AI product in the market. The high demand from users prompted a sharing model in which access is temporarily restricted during peak hours to accommodate as many users as possible. The demand also comes at huge technical costs. Running the most-used AI platform on the market requires significant technical spending that private capital alone cannot provide. Anthropic’s decision to go public is well-timed, as it seeks to remain the most valuable AI company in the market.
Artificial intelligence continues to dominate the global tech scene as investors turn their sights towards this technology and the opportunities it brings. OpenAI is eyeing an IPO at a $1 trillion valuation. NVIDIA, a graphics processing unit maker whose GPUs are used to train and run AI models, has a market capitalization of $4.5 trillion. Anthropic is now valued at almost a trillion dollars ($965 billion).
Today’s AI rush can be likened to the early days of the internet, with its euphoric investment cycles, speculation, believers, and critics. The Pope recently called for caution, describing Artificial Intelligence as a threat to humanity and the planet. He argued that the technology is part of a longer cycle of exploitation and destruction, and that contending with it requires a framework of social justice.
