The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), a government-owned postal company responsible for courier services in Nigeria is undergoing a digital transformation to enhance its logistics services.

The company is implementing a new digital postal service system that will generate unique Parcel IDs or QR codes for each package, enabling real-time tracking and faster delivery, according to two people familiar with the matter.

“These codes allow for instant tracking, address verification, prompt customer updates and will significantly reduce wait times,” one person close to the company told Condia. NIPOST is currently seeking agents nationwide—across its 955 post offices and 3,000 postal agencies in Nigeria to support the rollout of this technology system, according to a memo seen by Condia.

This move will be received as a long-awaited revamp to its poor service delivery in the logistics sector over the years, which is now saturated with global players like UPS, DHL, and numerous tech-enabled delivery startups. 

YC-Backed Touch and Pay Technologies (TAP), the company behind Cowry Cards has been onboarded as the technology partner to help NIPOST consolidate this digital system, one person familiar with the conversations said. TAP’s successful use case in contactless payments with Cowry Cards has positioned them for this QR code rollout, which shares some similarities with the touch and pay feature. The rollout phase of the parcel ID has begun this month, the same person said.

This tech upgrade aims to modernise NIPOST’s services, which have been losing revenue and public appeal. Additionally, it could significantly improve operations in rural areas, where 60% of NIPOST’s users reside.

NIPOST is not merely reacting to market changes; it’s proactively embracing technological advancements. With its super agent and IMTO licenses, the company is positioned to expand into financial services. Its extensive rural network could make it a key player in driving financial inclusion across Nigeria.
