Following regulatory approval, 9mobile’s nearly 3 million subscribers will now roam on MTN’s extensive network. This 3-year deal is expected to improve coverage and service quality for users who have long experienced connectivity issues.

9mobile has experienced a significant decline in its subscriber base, dropping from a peak of 23.5 million in 2015 to less than 3 million by April 2025. This represents an 87.4% loss in subscribers. The company has been struggling with subscriber churn, particularly after the departure of its technical partner and investors, and was recently acquired by LH Telecoms Nigeria, a subsidiary of Light House Capital.

Data roaming is when your mobile device uses a cellular data network outside of your home network’s coverage area, typically when traveling internationally or in areas where your carrier doesn’t have a direct network presence. It allows you to access the internet and other data services even when you are not within your usual network.

The partnership aligns with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC)’s push for shared infrastructure by promoting resource optimization and extending connectivity, particularly in underserved areas.

“This agreement represents a significant step in our commitment to driving industry collaboration, improving customer experience, and supporting the NCC’s vision of a fully connected Nigeria,” said Karl Toriola, chief executive officer of MTN Nigeria.

“It demonstrates what we can achieve when we collaborate, and we are delighted to announce it today after months of groundwork.”

MTN and 9mobile represent contrasting realities. MTN dominates the market and recently launched a $240 million data center, while 9mobile is facing setbacks that have almost set the telco backwards.

Over the next few months, 9mobile subscribers should begin noticing stronger signals and fewer dropped calls as MTN’s coverage fills in suburban and rural zones. The success of this partnership could pave the way for more infrastructure sharing in Nigeria’s competitive telecom market while elevating MTN as the category leader.
