Have an opinion you’d like to share with Condia’s readers? Great! Please read on…
Here’s what we’re looking for.
A punchy opinion
We thrive on sparking debate. Conventional wisdom bores us. So, while everyone’s preaching one thing, we’re hunting for the radical, the unexpected. Challenge the status quo. Prove us wrong. Send us a pitch that makes us question what we know about the African tech ecosystem.
Personality and/or humour
We want your personality to shine! Inject your unique voice into your writing. Your experiences are gold – share them with us. Don’t be afraid to let your hair down and have some fun. This isn’t a stuffy academic paper; we want to read something engaging and enjoyable. So, ditch the jargon and write like you talk.
Data, anecdotes, examples
Make a strong argument. Support your claims with concrete evidence. Use data, personal experiences, expert opinions, and relevant research to bolster your points. For instance, instead of simply stating “Remote work is more productive,” provide statistics on increased employee satisfaction and productivity in remote settings, share personal anecdotes about your own remote work experiences, quote productivity experts, and reference studies on the topic.
What to consider:
Focus on Africa. While global trends can be informative, we’re primarily interested in how they apply to African startups. A few international examples can add context, but the core of your argument should be rooted in the African ecosystem.
Consider the other side. A well-rounded argument acknowledges opposing viewpoints. By addressing potential counterarguments, you strengthen your own position.
Back it up. Support your claims with data, examples, and expert opinions that are relevant to the African startup landscape.
Focus on one key point. Trying to cover too much ground will dilute your message. Choose a specific angle and delve deep. For instance, instead of writing about “managing and hiring talent,” focus on “why a salesperson is essential in early-stage startups.”
Be specific and relevant. Tailor your piece to a particular audience and time. Capitalise on current trends and events to make your article more impactful. For example, if there’s a surge of interest in mobility, share your insights on the topic.
Example Of Stories We Accept
- The exciting relationship between women and mobile money in Africa by Rashi Gupta, Group Chief Operating Officer at MFS Africa
- Inside the hell that Lagos tech bros go through to rent a house by Alex Omenye is a Nigerian writer
- These Nigerian women talk about balancing their tech careers and motherhood by Joyce Imiegha and Toyosi Adebusuyi; storytellers at Reneé PR
Here’s what we’re not looking for.
Self-promotion: Focus on the bigger picture. We’re less interested in self-promotion and more in insightful analysis. VCs, avoid simply touting your latest investment. Founders resist the urge to solely highlight your market opportunity.
While it’s fine to discuss your work, provide context. Show how your experiences fit into a broader trend or challenge the status quo.
Pre-written pieces: Please pitch us a new idea. Send a compelling headline and a brief outline of your argument in bullet points.
We want fresh, original thinking, not something you’ve already written or your client has.
