The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has signed a direct international mail partnership with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, a move aimed at significantly enhancing the efficiency and reliability of cross-border logistics for Nigerian businesses and individuals.

Postmaster-General Tola Odeyemi announced the agreement, highlighting that the collaboration marks the first direct partnership of its kind for NIPOST in many years.

“With this new partnership, KLM will now handle our outbound international mail directly, with no middlemen involved,” Odeyemi said on Monday. The deal is expected to streamline international mail and cargo delivery by eliminating reliance on third-party handlers.

The direct link with KLM’s extensive global network, spanning over 200 countries, is poised to offer faster transit times, reduced handling charges, and decreased risk of loss or damage for shipments originating from Nigeria. This development is particularly critical for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) engaged in international trade, providing them with a more predictable and cost-effective channel for exports.

Odeyemi noted that securing the partnership was facilitated by NIPOST’s efforts to clear outstanding debts owed to international carriers, signalling a push to rebuild global trust and reposition the agency. The agreement with KLM is presented as a foundational step in NIPOST’s broader modernisation agenda to become a more capable, transparent, and globally connected institution.
