Netflix, the US-based subscription video streaming platform, has announced a third price hike in the past 11 months for Nigerian users, with the premium subscription now costing ₦8,500 up from ₦7,000, reflecting a 21% increase. This change, effective July 4, 2025, follows a broader trend of rising digital service costs in Nigeria amid local macroeconomic challenges.

The streaming company also increased its Mobile plan to ₦2,500, Basic to ₦4,000, and Standard to ₦6,500. This comes after a previous round of hikes in July 2024, when the Premium plan jumped 40% from ₦5,000 to ₦7,000.

What’s driving Netflix’s price hike?

Netflix cites multiple pressures like soaring inflation, naira devaluation, which has raised operational costs and continued global content investment.

Despite this, critics argue that Netflix has not delivered enough localised content or pricing models tailored to Nigerian users. Popular sentiment has reflected growing discontent. This is key for Nigerians who have found themselves in a tight spot—battling recent increments in data and food prices.

The streaming giant’s latest decision may cost it loyalty in a highly price-sensitive Nigerian market. The coming months could see a major shift in market share if Showmax and Prime Video continue offering better value for money.
