MyFoodAngels, a grocery delivery startup providing users with farm-fresh foods and personalised meal recommendations, is implementing sustainable packaging to contribute to the environment.
This move follows several in-house iterations by the grocery company to reduce plastic and adopt sustainable development goals.
“Imagine someone bought five kegs of five-litre Palm oil from us over the last five months,” Olapeju Umah, the company CEO, said. “That would leave them with more kegs to trash.”
Umah believes in reusable packaging and refill options as the next vital step, citing the environmental impact of single-use plastics.
” This way, customers can save more and do not have to buy new bottles.”
For instance, a palm oil refill option offers customers a price reduction from ₦4,000 to ₦3,850 per litre. Customers can select this option during website checkout, providing cost savings for more shopping.
The company is also implementing a crate return system for eggs and aims to eliminate the use of nylon for all deliveries.
“You do not need more egg crates at home to add to the previous ones. We will supply you and take back our crates.”
Exploring biodegradable plastics as a long-term delivery solution will make the company the first grocery delivery platform to pivot into eco-friendly packaging, often claimed to be sustainable for the planet. MyFoodAngels has continued innovating how to introduce sustainable packaging or reduce plastics for all other food items beyond palm oil and eggs.

The company has experienced rapid growth, with its gross merchandise value (GMV) reportedly quadrupling in the past year. Additionally, the company served over 50,000 customers in 2024. Leveraging a network of local farmers and in-house palm oil milling, MyFoodAngels has established a strong presence in the Lagos market. It directly supplies restaurants and individuals with groceries, including tomatoes, bell peppers, palm oil, and protein from the farm.
The grocery company currently seeks $500,000, which will be deployed to expand its reach beyond Lagos, invest in new product development within the fisheries sector, and support the upcoming launch of its mobile application, currently in beta testing.
The app is expected to streamline customer onboarding and further accelerate growth.
