In a major push to localize the benefits of artificial intelligence, Meta has partnered with the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy (FMCIDE) to launch the Llama Impact Accelerator, a 8-month program aimed at empowering Nigerian startups to build socially impactful AI solutions using open-source tools.

Backed by key government agencies like the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR) and the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), the initiative puts Nigeria’s growing tech ecosystem at the center of Africa’s AI future.

The program is anchored on Meta’s Llama open-source large language models, which are increasingly being adopted globally as accessible alternatives to proprietary AI systems. But this isn’t just a technical rollout— It’s a strategic bet on homegrown innovation.

Participants will tackle critical national challenges across four sectors: Agriculture, Security & Safety, Healthcare, and a “wild card” category.

The accelerator begins with a six-week incubation phase, offering technical deep-dives, AI ethics workshops, and mentorship from global AI experts. After that, selected startups move into six months of extended support, with access to advanced resources, cloud infrastructure, and networking opportunities with policymakers and investors.

Dr. ’Bosun Tijani, Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy, framed the initiative as part of a broader strategy to position Nigeria as a regional leader in ethical AI development.

“This partnership marks a major step forward in our mission to develop a thriving AI ecosystem in Nigeria,” said Tijani

“We see AI as a key driver for national development, and this program by Meta will equip innovators with the right tools and guidance to tackle some of our most pressing issues.”

The Llama Impact Accelerator is part of Meta’s larger vision to “democratize AI,” a vision that aligns with ongoing debates about ethical AI, data localization, and Africa’s role in shaping global tech standards.

Applications are open until June 27, 2025. Teams with strong technical backgrounds, innovative ideas, and a passion for solving local problems are encouraged to apply. Details are available at: llamaimpactssa.splashthat.com

With open-source tech, deep government collaboration, and a sharp focus on real-world problems, the Llama Impact Accelerator could mark a new chapter in African AI where innovation is driven not just by code, but by context.
