A groundswell of public support has emerged following the tragic death of Adetunji ‘TeeJay’ Opayele, with over 28,000 people joining a change.org petition calling for a comprehensive investigation and legal accountability.
On March 4, 2025, Opayele was returning from a gym session, riding his power bike along Ozumba Mbadiwe in Victoria Island, Lagos. According to detailed eyewitness accounts, the incident unfolded when Biola Adams-Odutayo, driving a vehicle with license plate LND 418 JR, allegedly merged onto the expressway without considering approaching traffic.
A disturbing sequence of events
The petition reveals a deeply troubling narrative of the accident’s aftermath. Despite Opayele wearing full safety gear, he was knocked unconscious. The most shocking allegations include:
- Adams-Odutoya, the Sales Head at HygeiaHMO, refused to exit her vehicle refused to exit her vehicle
- Witnesses claim she ignored pleas to help the victim
- She allegedly remained on a phone call for over 30 minutes while Opayele lay breathing but unconscious
One witness was reportedly told, “She doesn’t want blood to stain her car” when requesting assistance.
Following these chain of events, the petition documenting TeeJay Opayele’s death revealed that multiple hospitals allegedly refused to treat Opayele. Eyewitnesses ultimately transported him to a medical facility, where he was pronounced dead in the early morning hours of March 5.
In a further controversial twist, Adams-Odutoya reportedly entered the same hospital, requested a drip, claimed shock, and attempted to flee.
Apart from his role at Bumpa, where he worked to empower small businesses with digital tools, Opayele was widely regarded for his contributions to Nigeria’s tech ecosystem. His sudden passing has left a void, sparking outrage and renewed conversations about accountability on the roads.
Teejay’s community is calling for accountability, urging authorities to upgrade the charges from reckless driving to manslaughter. Supporters are also pushing for the involvement of elected government officials and measures to prevent the potential misuse of social influence in legal proceedings.
Adams-Odutoya reportedly spent just one night in detention, with bail set at ₦1 million, which she immediately met.
The petition exposes deeper frustrations with how wealth and connections can shield people from consequences. Citizens demand that the Lagos State Government look beyond influence and deliver true justice.
As of writing, the petition continues to gain signatures, and investigations are reportedly ongoing.
