What’s new in Samsung’s new foldables from Galaxy Unpacked 2025?

The Unpacked 2025 event brought some familiar shapes and Samsung isn’t trying to blow minds this year. Just pushing the smoother, lighter and pocketable foldable trend.

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 leads the charge with top-tier performance and a sharper 200MP camera, while the Z Flip 7 gets a more usable cover screen and smart AI integrations.

The surprise of the event was the launch of a more affordable Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE for those wanting to try foldables without paying flagship prices.

These aren’t radical upgrades, but they’re significant, especially if you already rely on Samsung’s ecosystem.

Samsung’s new foldables come slimmer and tougher

Unveiled at Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2025, the Z Fold 7 is the company’s thinnest yet, measuring just 8.9 mm folded and 4.2 mm unfolded. It now weighs 239g and uses Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 and a new Armor Flex hinge for better durability. Z Flip 7 feels flatter and cleaner when closed.

But the biggest difference is the new 4.1-inch Flex window cover display, which stretches edge to edge and fits more widgets and app previews. Both use Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2, a tougher hinge (Armor Flex), and an IPX8 rating for water resistance.

As announced at Unpacked 2025, the Z Fold 7 will run on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 “Elite for Galaxy” chip, delivering:

  • 41% faster AI processing
  • 38% CPU boost
  • 26% GPU improvement

Z Flip 7 and Flip 7 FE switch to Exynos 2500 and 2400 respectively—slightly behind in power, especially for intensive AI features. All models will run Android 16 with One UI 8, bringing streamlined multitasking, better customisation, and Galaxy AI upgrades.

Same batteries, smarter power

Battery sizes haven’t changed much, but AI is picking up the slack.

Z Fold 7 sticks with a 4,400 mAh cell but leans on AI to optimise usage.

Z Flip 7 now packs 4,300 mAh—the largest ever in a Flip—and promises longer screen-on time.

Z Flip 7 FE includes a 4,000 mAh battery at a lower price point.

Both phones will ship with upgraded cameras

Samsung is closing the gap between its foldables and traditional flagships with meaningful camera improvements. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 now features a 200MP main sensor, alongside 12MP ultra-wide and 10MP telephoto lenses. There’s also a 10MP front camera, but most of the photo improvements come from better image processing and sharper detail.

The Z Flip 7 and Flip 7 FE both upgrade to a 50MP main camera, with enhanced FlexCam features that take advantage of the foldable design for hands-free shooting, AI post-processing, and better selfie performance using the main camera.

An in-built Galaxy AI

AI now plays a central role across Samsung’s new foldables, helping with tasks like search, translation, and content cleanup. In partnership with Google, Circle to Search now works in more apps, including games. Live Translate offers real-time voice translation during phone calls. Notes and Messages support automatic summaries and formatting. Audio Eraser filters out background noise in voice and video recordings.

Samsung is also introducing Galaxy AI Keep, a new privacy feature that limits how much user data is shared. Given how central AI now is to the user experience, this aims to give users more control over what’s analyzed and stored.

Plus a new addition to the foldable range

Samsung is expanding its Fan Edition lineup with the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE, targeting core foldable features at a more accessible price. Announced during Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2025, it starts at $899—$200 cheaper than the standard Flip 7, though it still sits in the premium bracket.

The Z Flip 7 FE will launch with:

  • Exynos 2400 chip
  • 50MP camera
  • 4,000 mAh battery
  • Slightly thicker body

While more affordable than Samsung’s other foldables, it faces stiff competition from rivals like Motorola’s 2025 Razr, which starts at just $700.

Prices start from $1,000

Samsung’s 2025 foldables start at $1,099 (about ₦1.65 million) for the Galaxy Z Flip 7, which holds the same price as last year’s Flip 6 and is now cheaper than the Motorola Razr 60 Ultra. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 starts at $1,999 (around ₦3 million), a $100 increase over last year’s US price but unchanged in the UK at £1,799 (roughly ₦3.5 million). The new Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE offers a lower-cost option starting at $899 (about ₦1.35 million).

Availability: Pre-orders began July 9, shipping from July 25.

With that, Samsung Unpacked 2025 wraps up, bringing the Galaxy Z Fold 7, Z Flip 7, Flip 7 FE, and the latest Galaxy Watch lineup into the spotlight alongside plenty of AI-powered features. We’ll be releasing full reviews in the coming days, especially to see how these updates stack up in everyday use.

Stay tuned.
