Nigeria’s National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) confirmed its website was hacked, raising concerns about the security of public data in the country. The bureau urged citizens to disregard any information posted on the site until it’s fully restored.

This incident marks the third major data breach involving sensitive government information in Nigeria this year. In March and June, other critical websites were compromised, including the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) database, where personal data was allegedly sold for a mere ₦190 (13 cents) on a platform called Anyverify.

The frequency of these cyberattacks underscores the vulnerability of Nigeria’s digital infrastructure and highlights the potential for sensitive citizen data to fall into the wrong hands.

“The recent hack of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) website is alarming, especially considering its role as Nigeria’s primary agency for data collection, analysis, and dissemination,” Kehinde Adegboyega, the founder and team lead at Human Rights Journalists Network told Condia.

“As a data protection advocate and digital rights expert, I emphasize the need for proactive measures to safeguard sensitive information and maintain public trust.”
