Africa Data Centres, Gold Synergy unveil self-cooling AI rack

In a landmark move to enhance  high-performance computing on the continent , Africa Data Centres,a subsidiary of Cassava Technologies, has deployed o a self-cooling rack, developed by Gold Synergy, at its CPT1 facility in Cape Town.

Commissioned in January 2025, this rack is engineered to minimise energy consumption while supporting the rising demand for compute-intensive workloads including artificial intelligence, big data analytics, and enterprise cloud applications.

“By integrating this cutting-edge cooling solution at CPT1, we are creating a model for how data centres in Africa can scale intelligently while remaining aligned with global sustainability targets,” said Adil El Youssefi, CEO of Africa Data Centres.

Africa’s data infrastructure is under increasing pressure due to surging demand for cloud computing, AI workloads, and digital services. Traditional cooling systems, while effective, are energy-intensive and costly to scale particularly in regions with power supply constraints.

Gold Synergy’s self-cooling rack technology provides a self-contained, CDU-based (cooling distribution unit) solution that reduces dependency on external cooling systems, increases rack density without major infrastructure overhaul, cuts operational costs  and aligns with Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) targets.

“Our self-cooling rack solution is a game-changer for high-density computing environments,” said Fortune Utubor, Executive at Gold Synergy. “It reflects our shared commitment to energy efficiency and operational excellence.”

South Africa continues to solidify its position as a digital gateway for the continent, thanks to reliable infrastructure, proximity to key markets, and increasing investment in cloud and hyperscale technologies.

The CPT1 facility which is already a critical node in Africa Data Centres’ interconnection network now serves as a proving ground for energy-efficient innovation in the region.

The deployment expands hosting capacity with minimal infrastructure upgrades, positions CPT1 as a sustainable high-density hub and enhances Africa Data Centres’ role as a leader in green digital infrastructure.
