7 major African crypto events you can’t afford to miss in 2026

In 2026, Africa’s crypto landscape is undergoing a seismic shift, moving from speculative trading to utility assets, driven by robust institutional regulations and the rise of stablecoins.

On the continent, the idea of crypto being only a speculative asset that holds the power to mint millions overnight is gradually fading. Instead, it’s moving towards stability, represented by the rise of stablecoins in circulation.

Last year, the memecoin culture was strong in the African space, involving both retail traders, business leaders, and even a government. In February 2025, President Faustin-Archange Touadéra of the Central African Republic launched a national memecoin, $CAR, marking the height of the memecoin craze on the continent.

This year, the craze has died down, stifled by tighter regulations and a shift towards stability, following the downsides of extreme volatility that dominated memecoins.

Stablecoins are the new bride on the continent. They now account for 43% of all crypto transactions in Sub-Saharan Africa. In Nigeria, the cNGN stablecoin is gaining dominance alongside Tether (USDT) and Circle (USDC), serving as a hedge against inflation and a means of daily transactions.

Despite a global slump in the prices of crypto, including Bitcoin, Africa’s crypto ecosystem remains vibrant, buoyed by the increasing adoption of stablecoins. The ecosystem has lined up a series of events to keep the conversation going, providing a platform for the exchange of ideas and networking.

Many of these are annual events, while some are inaugural editions signaling the ecosystem’s expansion. Here are some African Crypto events happening in 2026

ETH Cape Town —   Cape Town

ETH Cape Town, Africa’s leading Ethereum-focused hackathon and conference, offering a vital platform for the continent’s 700,000+ developers to innovate and collaborate.

This year’s theme, “Empowering Africa’s Builders,” marks a shift from a traditional conference format to an education-first approach. The event focuses on solving structural challenges like financial inclusion and decentralized identity through Layer 2 scaling and smart contract innovation.

A similar ETH event was held in Enugu, Nigeria, last year, attracting ETH enthusiasts from all over the world.

The event is expected to attract 350+ hackers onsite and 500+ conference attendees, bridging global expertise with local talent.

Discussions include analyzing the role of Web3 in shaping Africa’s projected $29 trillion GDP by 2050. It remains the essential gathering for those building the backbone of the decentralized web in Africa. The date and the venue for the event are yet to be announced.

Africa Blockchain & DeFi Summit  —  April 29 in Lagos

It bridges the gap between the tech hubs of Yaba and the financial powerhouses of Victoria Island, making it the definitive event for anyone monitoring the commercialization of blockchain in Africa’s largest economy.

The organisers of this event are yet to pick a date in July at the time of this report.

Africa Bitcoin Conference  —  Dec 2 in Malawi

The event features a Bitcoin Village exhibition, workshops on self-custody, and panels on Bitcoin’s role in liberation from debt-heavy systems.

The event is expected to attract over 400 attendees from more than 13 countries, emphasizing Bitcoin’s role in cross-border payments and hedging against inflation. It is organized by the Africa Bitcoin Conference (ABC).

These African crypto events happening in 2026 will help shape the ecosystem on the continent as it opens up to new ways of moving money.
